Managing Rapid Weight Loss After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Jaime Allen

Gastric sleeve surgery can be a successful weight loss option for some people, depending on current health status and BMI. This type of surgery tends to result in rapid weight loss, which can be difficult to manage without the proper tools and knowledge base. Consult with your doctor before your surgery to address any concerns you might have, and take the following ideas into consideration as you prepare for your weight loss journey to continue.

Document Symptoms

Some people may experience a range of symptoms as they begin to lose weight quickly. These symptoms can range from mood swings to hair loss, but they may be different from one person to the next. Start making a list of symptoms, taking note of changes in your body aside from the loss of weight. It is also a good idea to track your weight daily, as this information combined with health issues you are experiencing can help your doctor determine if additional interventions are needed. However, if you experience acute or life-threatening symptoms, do not wait until your next doctor's appointment to address the concerns.

Manage Your Diet

You may feel the need to continue to cut calories in the same way you did before your surgery, but it's important to remember that your dietary needs will change along with the changes in your body. For example, liquid diets that provide your daily calorie intake may not be a great option. You'll want to make sure that all the foods you do eat provide the nutritional value your body needs to stay healthy. Ask your doctor to recommend a nutritionist you can work with after your procedure. You can then put together a healthy eating plan that takes portion size, caloric intake, and nutritional value into account so you can make the most of every bite of food you take.

Stay Active

Staying active can help your body handle the rapid weight loss you're experiencing. Building muscle, engaging in cardio workouts, and making sure to move throughout the day can help transform your body as you begin to shed pounds. Working with a trainer can be a great option for those who have just undergone gastric sleeve surgery. If you had mobility issues or were unable to work out before the procedure, your trainer will help you ease into a fitness routine that works for you without causing undue stress on your body. Be sure to look for a trainer who understands the type of surgery you've had and the challenges you face as you begin to lose weight. Your trainer's goal shouldn't be to help you shed pounds. Instead, their goal should be to help you increase your overall fitness level and maintain a healthy level of activity each day.
