STD Testing: 4 Tips Every Woman Should Know

Jaime Allen

Most people think it would be obvious if they had a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or infection. Unfortunately, that is not true. Many STDs show no signs or symptoms, which is why it is incredibly important that you are tested regularly. While it may be scary, it's necessary in order to maintain your health.

If you are scared of getting an STD test, don't worry—you are not alone. By knowing what to expect, you can put some of your nerves at ease. So here are four tips for women getting an STD test:

1. Nothing Is The Same

Just like regular health conditions, like diabetes, no two cases of STDs are the same. The same is true for testing. The wait time, friendliness, and experience of testing are all variable. So while you may experience terror the first time, you might just find that the next time you visit everything is calm. Remembering this is very important, as it might help keep you calm.

2. Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

Blood draws and urinating in a cup can dehydrate you. Even if you are only having one type of test done, it is important to stay hydrated and eat well. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. You should also bring along a bottle of water and drink it down while you wait. If you aren't hungry because of nerves, consider bringing a healthy snack or some crackers with you. Eating something light after a blood draw can prevent nausea and exhaustion.

3. Go When You Aren't On Your Period

Your menstrual cycle will not interfere with the testing, but it can make you feel even worse afterwards. When you are on your cycle, your iron levels are probably lower than normal. Combine low iron levels with a blood draw, and you might feel particularly bad afterwards. So play it safe and go when you aren't on your period.

4. Ask How To Get Your Results

Finally, make sure you know how you will be receiving your results. Each clinic is different, so it is important to ask. Most major STDs are easy to test for and you should receive your results within a few days. In most cases, you will usually receive a phone call or letter in the mail. However, you might also be able to call in for your results or check online.

You should also ask what tests are being done. Sometimes, clinics will only test for the major STDs and nothing else. However, if you have a concern you should ask. If you aren't being tested for something you want to be, you can always ask to have that test done too.

Getting an STD test may not be fun, but it's important for your overall health. So don't be scared, just relax, and go with it. But if you do experience some anxiety, hopefully these tips will help you know what to expect.
