Jaime Allen

Lift chairs are a useful tool for helping those with mobility issues remain more independent. For most they are a comfortable and convenient piece of furniture, but they need to be chosen carefully and used safely. Here are some tips to keep in mind, both before and after your purchase.

Choose the Right Size

Each model of chair at http://www.cornermedical.com is able to lift a specific amount of weight. Standard chairs will lift approximately 400 pounds or less. A more durable chair will often handle around 500 pounds. For anyone above this weight limit, bariatric or heavy-duty models will need to be chosen. Know the weight of the patient before you begin shopping so you can be assured the chair will be able to work appropriately. Another issue is width of the seat, always make certain there is enough room for the person, any medical equipment they need to have and space for their pet, as it is common for the elderly and infirm to have their furry sidekicks frequently next to them.

Know Their Needs

Some patients need a chair to sleep in rather than just sit. People with circulatory disorders will often need to elevate their feet above their hearts each day and some who suffer from respiratory disorders will find it easier to sleep in a semi-sitting position. These people will benefit from either a three-position chair because these are able to recline, sit-up and lift, or an infinite position chair that can be adjusted in numerous angles. Two-position chairs are only able to lift and remain in a seated position.

Consider Their Limits

The health of the person the chair is being purchased for should be taken into account prior to the purchase. People with dementia need chairs with very basic controls. If they are frequently spilling food and drinks or often incontinent, consider either a vinyl or leather chair that will be easier to clean. If cloth upholstery is desired, always make certain a stain protectant has been applied. Movable arms make it possible to move into the chair from the side, often a necessity for those who are aided by wheelchairs.

Lift chairs offer a lot of assistance for anyone who finds themselves waiting for help to stand. The user of these chairs should also be strong enough and not have any balance issues so that they are able to leave the chair safely and not be at risk for falls. Medicare will cover part of the cost of lift chairs for some types of illnesses, so always check with your insurance company before you make any purchases.
